LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION: GROWTH SECTORS
Several sectors of the economy have the potential to bring significant economic and social benefits to South Yorkshire.
The chart below shows which sectors have grown over the past five years. It shows growth in several sectors including; Information and Communication, Health, Real estate, Professional, scientific and technical and Transport & Storage jobs.
There have been employment declines in many sectors too but this does not mean there are fewer positions. Employment declines may be the result of less funding, more technological investment or jobs moving to other parts of the UK (or the world).
Why does it not show the sector I’m interested in?
The way we categorise the economy means that some sectors (e.g. digital or low carbon) are challenging to identify. Sectors are also nebulous and the extent to which an employer is part of one sector or another is sometime an artificial division. Consider, Amazon - should the company fit under transport and storage, retail or information?
What are the key sectors?
South Yorkshire is full of ambition, optimism and energy. We are home to a growing number of global companies and thriving sectors of high growth companies, with significant strengths in many sectors. These are identified below:
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Intelligent Mobility & Transport

- Green & Low Carbon
Not all of the these sectors are not displayed on the charts but if you require more information please email; Economy@southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk or visit the Start Platform.
