Penny Blackham Music Board

MEET THE MUSIC BOARD CHAIR

Penny Blackham has worked in the music industry for more than 30 years and is Chair of the South Yorkshire Music Board. In her first blog Penny introduces the board, what its members hope to achieve and her plans to share more opportunities with the people who work in South Yorkshire’s music industry.

Having worked in the music industry in South Yorkshire for more than three decades, I will tell anyone who wants to listen what a brilliant place South Yorkshire is to make music, sell music, play music and learn music. I couldn’t be more proud to represent South Yorkshire as Chair of the Music Board.

The board – formed by Mayor Dan Jarvis MP in 2018 – has at its core a small number of experienced and passionate industry practitioners who have developed their careers in the industry from a South Yorkshire base. These include label owners, festival directors, artists, educators and we also have members from national membership and representational groups such as the Musicians Union, Performing Rights Society and regional MPs.

We work with politicians and national organisations including PRS, the British Phonographic Industry, The Musicians Union, Music Venues Trust and UK Music, to ensure the needs of South Yorkshire’s music industry are at the heart of the national agenda.

We want to ensure people in the industry have the tools they need to create, perform, learn and teach. We represent the interests of South Yorkshire’s music industry, music education, music heritage and music economy and our ambition is to ensure our region has the support it needs.  We also want to broaden the focus away from London and in the regions, the working heart of the industry.

With Covid and Brexit making this a worrying time for people across the industry, the Board has teamed up with Music:Local to signpost people to funding opportunities, advice and anything else that can support people working in music in South Yorkshire.

Over the coming months our new social media channels will be sharing funding opportunities, mentoring schemes and conferences. We’ll be sharing the latest updates on Brexit and how that may impact touring, including what support is available. And, of course, we’ll be celebrating artists successes and sharing good news from the industry.

As a Board we want to help anyone in the industry facing challenges. Whether you are experiencing barriers to progressing your business or career, want advice on next steps or want to find out what funding is available for projects, touring or exporting please follow us on @MusicSouthYorks on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest information.
