South Yorkshire Infrastructure Inquiry
South Yorkshire’s Mayor called for an independent Infrastructure Inquiry to examine the legislative, regulatory and policy framework governing significant changes to privately owned infrastructure.
The Inquiry, chaired by Martin McKervey, drew on evidence from experts, stakeholders and members of the public. While informed by the closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, it considers infrastructure issues more broadly.
Final report
The Inquiry has now concluded and the final report has been published.
The Mayor of South Yorkshire attended the report’s launch event on 30 June 2026.
Recommendations
The report sets out recommendations relating to:
- community asset powers in relation to major infrastructure
- the role of national planning policy
- the national approach to regional aviation
- coordination between government and regional stakeholders
Next steps
The report has been submitted to the Mayor of South Yorkshire and will inform ongoing discussions with Government and partners.
