ONE WEEK TO GO UNTIL SOUTH YORKSHIRE CHOOSES ITS NEXT MAYOR

Published 28 April 2022 at 9:21am

In just seven days’ time, South Yorkshire will vote for its next mayor.

On Thursday 5 May, polling stations will be open from 7am for voters to choose the person they want to make key decisions for the region and represent South Yorkshire on the national and international stage.

Dr Dave Smith, Chief Executive of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Returning Officer, said: “We’ve been spreading the word far and wide, from the football grounds to social media to messages on buses across the region, this mayor will represent you and we want everyone to get out and have their say on who should step into the role.

“There’s such an important job ahead for the Mayor of South Yorkshire. They will oversee a budget of £1.3 billion over their four-year tenure which includes funding for economic development, transport, regeneration, net zero projects and adult education.”

Once the polls close at 10pm, votes will be collected by each of the four local authorities with counting will take place on Friday. Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield will each announce their local totals before the overall result is announced, expected to come sometime in the afternoon of Friday 6 May.

Dave Smith continued: “The message is clear. If you live in South Yorkshire and care about your region, use your vote to decide who your mayor will be.”
