SUPERTRAM RAIL REPLACEMENT WORKS MOVE TO HALFWAY

Published 18 June 2018 at 1:20pm

Essential work to extend the lifespan of the Supertram network, affecting the Blue route, will move to the area between Birley Lane and Halfway on Saturday 23 June.

As part of a three-year rail replacement project, works will start in Area 2 between Birley Lane and Halfway from Saturday 23 June and should carry on until Wednesday 8 August, subject to weather and site conditions. Works in Area 1, between Hillsborough and Middlewood, were completed on Sunday 17 June.

“We are pleased with the progress made so far and are confident that, as a result, we’ll provide a smoother ride and extend the life of the popular Supertram system. We’d also like to thank our customers and residents in Hillsborough and Middlewood for their patience whilst the works were carried out, particularly when our contractors had to work overnight”, says South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) Director of Public Transport, Ben Gilligan.

“We’d like to invite the public to come to a drop-in event at Crystal Peaks on Wednesday 20 June, between 11am and 4pm, to discuss the Area 2 works. Representatives from SYPTE, Stagecoach Supertram and our contractor VolkerRail will be there to talk to customers and explain how they will impact the area.”

Area 2 works will affect Blue route tram services, which will terminate at Birley Lane. Replacement buses will carry on until Halfway, serving the stops that will be temporarily closed.

SYPTE will keep customers informed about the works, bus and traffic diversions via its website travelsouthyorkshire.com/RailReplacement. Passengers can find the most up to date information via twitter @TSYalerts. Information about tram replacement bus routes will be available at supertram.com or @SCSupertram.

Affected tram services

During the works in Area 2, Blue route services will run as normal between Malin Bridge and Birley Lane, where they will terminate.

To minimise disruption to passengers, the B2 replacement buses will operate between Birley Lane and Halfway, where all tram stops will be temporarily closed.

Between Halfway Park and Ride and the Moss Way stop, the B2 bus service will run one, unchanged ‘core’ route for the duration of the works (Saturday 23 June to Wednesday 8 August).

Due to road closures on Birley Lane, Sheffield Road and Donetsk Way, B2 buses will run four diversion routes, between Moss Way and Birley Lane, whilst the works take place, which means that, at some times, the bus won’t always operate along the tram route and the nearest stop may be a short walk away. Regular bus services that operate in the area will also be diverted.

Halfway Park and Ride will remain open during the period, and parking will be free while the works last. Customers will just need to buy their tram ticket on board. Customers are advised to plan ahead, as journey times may be affected.

Tram only and Park and Ride tickets will be accepted on B2 services for the duration of the works. Passengers can buy their tickets on a tram or a bus.

Yellow and Purple routes will run normally during the works.
