MAYOR JARVIS WARNS FLOOD DEFENCE FUNDING ‘INADEQUATE’ TO PREVENT ANOTHER DISASTER IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Published 31 July 2020 at 3:33pm

Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region has responded to the new restrictions that were announced in parts of the North of England last night. He said:

“I want to reassure residents across South Yorkshire that we are not included in the further restrictions that were announced last night. However, the situation remains precarious, and the risk of a second wave is still very real. We will only prevent one if we remain vigilant.

“We all have a responsibility to play our part by closely following the official guidance from Public Health England. That means working from home where possible, regularly washing hands for at least 20 seconds, socially distancing, and keeping at least two metres away from people outside your household whenever possible. Crucially, you must get tested for COVID if you develop symptoms or otherwise suspect you might be infected.

“This weekend, many people across the region will be out enjoying the good weather and some will be celebrating the festival of Eid. I would encourage everyone to take sensible precautions, to follow the official guidance and not to meet in large gatherings.

“I continue to work very closely with our Local Authorities and the NHS. We are keeping a watchful eye on the data for South Yorkshire and remain ready to act quickly if the evidence demands.

“Only by continuing to work together and adhering to the guidance issued by Public Health England will we beat this virus.”
