Mayor of South Yorkshire and MP for Barnsley Central, Dan Jarvis has visited Gulliver’s Valley Theme Park Resort in Rotherham to meet with the company’s managing director, Julie Dalton.

Gulliver’s Valley opened in July 2020, after original plans were delayed due to lockdown. Since opening, the theme park has been a major success story of regeneration in South Yorkshire, repurposing a former coal mining site and enhancing the region’s leisure and tourism offering.

South Yorkshire MCA has supported Gulliver’s Valley through a series of financial packages including £1.5m from the Local Growth Fund which is part of the Government’s continued investment in the Northern Powerhouse.

The financial packages have helped to create over 100 jobs for the region and supported the longevity of the family business, which was forced to close during the pandemic.

Commenting on his visit to Gulliver’s Valley, Mayor Dan Jarvis said:

“Leisure and tourism play a vital role in levelling up South Yorkshire. We are home to many fantastic facilities like Gulliver’s Valley, which attracts thousands of visitors each year and makes a significant contribution to our local economy.

“It is a great example of what businesses across the region can achieve when we are given the tools to invest from central government. I am delighted to have been able to support Gulliver’s and it’s great to see them open and thriving after an extended period without generating income due to the pandemic.”

Julie Dalton, managing director of Gulliver’s Theme Park Resorts, said:

“We’re really proud of the journey we have been on to get to this point where Gulliver’s Valley is really embedding itself as part of the future of this area of South Yorkshire. Since we opened we have had such a warm welcome from the local community including residents, businesses and partners and they have all played a really important part in our successes so far and will continue to do so as we move forward.

“Our team is a vital part of what we do and the experiences we offer to our guests, and we have been really impressed by the quality of the staff team we are developing here. There are still lots of job opportunities available in a variety of flexible roles that would suit people from all walks of life, so we’d still be keen to hear from anyone interested in joining the Gulliver’s family.

“We are incredibly excited about the season ahead and have lots of great activities and developments planned for children and their families to enjoy so it was really timely to welcome Mayor Jarvis and show him around the resort so he could see at first-hand what we offer.”
