EMMA HARRISON - RETRAINING TO SUPPORT COMPANY GROWTH AND EXPANSION

Emma Harrison, 46, is a Quality Practitioner apprentice at Whyy? Change, a management consultancy and training company based in Sheffield.

Emma has taken on an apprenticeship to give her the skills to expand in her current role and to support her employer’s growth and expansion. Emma said:

“This learning will allow me to develop in my role as Director of Governance. It will teach me to define the systematic approach to Quality Management, plan and conduct audits and ensure we are following the procedures of our accredited partners.

“As a result of this learning, I can support the development and implementation of new products and services that we bring to the market by identifying and quantifying quality risks and preventing or mitigating these risks.”

Whyy? Change is committed to accreditation for its apprentices, because this helps to verify that an apprentice has met the minimum quality levels required. It ensures that the course has been validated by a credible external organisation to meet strict standards and is recognised by employers that the training undertaken has been rigorous.

Emma shared the benefits of her apprenticeship: “A major positive of my apprenticeship is the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and understanding of how a defined quality management system can help our business to grow. Structure and systems are key to delivering a quality output for our stakeholders and my role is instrumental to maintaining and enhancing a robust approach to systems management. We can give our stakeholders more confidence in how we work.

“As part of the apprenticeship programme I will be attending Bureau Veritas ISO 9001:2015 and Internal Auditor training which will help me to prepare our business to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification by the end of my apprenticeship. I will also complete Lean6 Yellow belt ISO 18404:2015 training and be registered with Chartered Quality Institute. As soon as I have successfully completed my end point assessment, I will qualify to register as a Practitioner with the Chartered Quality Institute.”

“Being an apprentice is rewarding, especially as I’m not fresh out of education and haven’t participated in formal learning to this level for a quite a few years. It’s challenging me too, which is exactly what I wanted. I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who wants to develop new knowledge and skills in their role. Age should never be a barrier to learning.”
