Why does it not show the sector I'm interested in?
The way we categorise the economy means that some sectors (e.g. digital or low carbon) are challenging to identify.
Sectors are also nebulous and the extent to which an employer is part of one sector or another is sometime an artificial division. Consider, Amazon - should the company fit under transport and storage, retail or information?
Did you know?
The mining sector used to employ around 12,000 people in South Yorkshire in 1961 and to date now employs around 200 people.
South Yorkshire has a range of sectors or industries which are more prominent here than they are in other areas. This includes the following sectors
- Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing
- Public sector
This is in part due to our economic history which shapes activities to this day. South Yorkshire continues to be an area that produces metals and materials. This has it’s history in various economic histories of the metals (e.g. steel industry), glass, plastics and other materials. Other prominent sectors can be down to individual large businesses or employers which make jobs easier to find in South Yorkshire than other areas.
