The Tour de Yorkshire cycle race will depart from Doncaster Town Centre on Thursday 2 May and from Barnsley Town Centre on Friday 3 May 2019, affecting public transport services along the route.

With thousands of people expected to travel to watch the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race, getting around parts of the region will be busier and some bus services will be temporarily diverted.

Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), said: “This great event attracts thousands of spectators from near and far each year and we expect more people than usual to rely on public transport as they come and watch the race in South Yorkshire. Some bus routes will be directly affected over the two days the region plays host to the race, so we’re asking passengers to plan ahead before travelling.”

Temporary changes to bus services in Doncaster on Thursday 2 May, include:
? First buses to Scawsby, Bentley, Arksey and Wheatley will be suspended between 1230 and 1345.
? First buses to Carcroft, Skellow, Woodlands, and Adwick le Street will be diverted between Doncaster and Woodlands (to run through Balby, along the A1(M) motorway and Barnsley Road) between 1230 and 1345.
? First buses to Edenthorpe, Kirk Sandall, Barnby Dun, Stainforth, Dunscroft, Hatfield, Hatfield Woodhouse, Thorne, Moorends, Bessacarr, Cantley, Auckley, Finningley and Rossington (including Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Doncaster Sheffield Airport) will be diverted in Doncaster Town Centre and will not serve the bus stops on Cleveland Street, Silver Street, Wood Street, South Parade or Bennetthorpe from 0730 to 1800. Customers are advised to catch these buses in Frenchgate Interchange.

? Buses will be diverted in Barnsley Town Centre and will not serve the bus stops on Market Hill, Shambles Street, St Mary’s Place and Regent Street. Customers are advised to catch buses in Barnsley Interchange.

Roads on and connected to the Tour de Yorkshire route are anticipated to be closed on a rolling basis lasting no more than one hour, apart from the start and finish lines, when the closures will last for longer.

Tim, added: “During events like these people often choose to leave their cars at home and switch to buses and trains as the best way to travel. We’d like to see more people make that a permanent change or at least try it for a few days a week for all or part of their commute. We also want to see people getting inspired to take their bikes out and integrate cycling into their daily commute. It adds to a healthier lifestyle, it’s cheaper and good for the environment.”

The fifth edition of the men’s race will encompass all four corners of the county and takes in 150 villages, towns and cities along the way. The Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race will be held on a Friday and Saturday for the first time, to allow more people to celebrate the race.
