COMMIT TO LEAVING YOUR KEYS BEHIND THIS WORLD CAR FREE DAY

Transport chiefs are encouraging people to use World Car Free Day to make a commitment to travelling in a more sustainable way to tackle climate change.
Cities across the globe are celebrating World Car-Free Day this Wednesday 22 September encouraging drivers to give up their cars for a day, but South Yorkshire transport chiefs are calling on people to go further.
This year, Travel South Yorkshire is urging commuters who normally travel by car to make a promise to switch to public transport, walking or cycling, for some of their journeys and contribute towards creating a cleaner, greener region by helping to curb air pollution.
Director of Customer Services, Tim Taylor, said: “World Car Free Day highlights the numerous benefits of going car-free, including reduced air pollution and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment.
“As people are starting to return to their workplaces, we’re reminding them that shifting to public transport, walking or cycling could have a big impact on the air quality in South Yorkshire as vehicle emissions are one of the main sources of outdoor air pollution, particularly in cities.”
Research shows that outdoor pollution levels could change dramatically if more people switch to commuting to work by public transport, or by using alternative modes. One bus can potentially take 75 cars out of the streets and a single train can potentially remove 500 cars from roads, contributing to tackle pollution and towards better flow of traffic.
“We know currently more people are using cars but we need to make a change to cut congestion and improve air quality for everyone. If people made a commitment to leaving their cars behind for just one day a week it could make a big difference. It’s a great time to make a shift to more sustainable transport.
“By trying the change this week you can also benefit from cheaper tickets for public transport. TravelMaster has partnered with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to offer discounts of up to 25% on all adult TravelMaster tickets, including multi-mode 1-Day, 7-Day, 28-Day and Annual, as well as the brand new Flexi5.
“Passengers can buy discounted tickets until Monday 27 September, so don’t miss your chance to travel for less in a cleaner, greener, safer way around South Yorkshire and start a new travel habit that lasts beyond one day”, says Tim.
TravelMaster tickets are discounted automatically and available from all TravelMaster retail channels, except rail stations – including, onboard buses and trams, at ticket vending machines, online or from a Payzone outlet.
Young people can get a double discount with 25% off adult TravelMaster ticket prices on top of the 15% off available to 18-22 card holders. The 25% discount does not apply to GetAbout tickets.
