BUS RAPID TRANSIT (NORTH)

We are working to build a super-connected city region; improving transport connectivity within the SYMCA region is a priority for us. 

After the region's two motorways and the A630 Parkway, the A6178 Attercliffe Road linking central Sheffield to Rotherham through the Lower Don Valley is the most heavily used travel-to-work route in the city region, with over 30,000 vehicles per day.

This project has delivered a 12km Bus Rapid Transit link between Sheffield and Rotherham under Tinsley Viaduct to facilitate regeneration and jobs creation along this important corridor.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) North is a high quality and efficient public transport service that has been developed to help people travel into and between the centres of Rotherham and Sheffield. It provides access to existing leisure, commercial and manufacturing facilities as well as facilitating economic growth by providing links to existing and proposed employment sites in the Lower Don Valley. 

BRT North improves the customer experience by raising the quality of the bus offer, as well as improving capacity, reliability and quality on the bus network. It provides essential congestion relief for local traffic at junction 34 south of the M1, through the creation of a new highway link under the motorway at Tinsley in Sheffield.

 This project, which has completed, included a contribution from the Government’s Local Growth Fund resources which is part of the Government’s continued investment in the Northern Powerhouse.

This investment is expected to deliver net 500 jobs.
